Couple of the Month December – Kayla and George

Kayla and George.

1. Why did you decide to have dance lessons?
Neither George or I are dancers and we really didn’t want to get up in front of our family and friends and embarrass ourselves by not knowing what we were doing. We wanted to do something a little fun and a bit more than just a basic 2 step slow dance (which I think is what everyone expected of us).
2. How or why did you pick your song for your 1st dance?
It was very difficult for George and I to choose a song – this was actually the hardest part of the whole process for us! We have completely different tastes in music and had different ideas on what sort of a vibe we wanted to go for. After much debate (and some expert advice from Kate), we settled on an acoustic version of “Use Somebody”, originally by Kings of Leon, version by Tyler Ward. We both like the song, it was a song we would often listen to in the car while travelling around, and it was released around the time we were dating in high school. Although it wasn’t a song that either of us would have chose in the beginning, it was a perfect fit for us.

3. How long before the wedding did you start your dance lessons?
I first contacted Kate about 10 weeks before the wedding and we had our first lesson a month before.

 4. What was the most important thing you wanted to get out of your wedding dance lessons?
We wanted to feel confident and comfortable in front of our guests, as well as surprising them with a decent dance. George wanted to keep it simple, and I wanted it to be fun – Kate created something for us that was right in the middle.

5. How did the dance turn out on the day?
Incredible! We made a few small errors, but we enjoyed every second of it – and that was all that mattered.

6. How did you feel straight after your dance was performed?

Like absolute bosses! We felt like we nailed it and couldn’t have been happier with the reaction from our guests – they loved it! We had the biggest smiles on our faces and just lived in the moment. It was such a fun and romantic moment of the night.
7. What advice do you have for future couples?
If you’re in 2 minds about getting lessons, definitely do it – it is worth every cent to feel confident and prepared on your big day.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves to choose a song – the sooner you choose something, the sooner you can get started on the dance! And at the end of the day, it’s not the song that matters – it’s the memories of dance that will be special to you.
Also just enjoy it – no one will notice if you make a mistake, just keep smiling and take it all in – it’s all over so quickly.
8. What was your favourite thing about your dance lessons?
Getting to spend some quality time together leading up to the wedding. Watching and helping each other improve every lesson. Enjoying the lessons (and even enjoying dancing!) in the end.
